What are the reasons for this unpredictability? 

If the answer were simple, it would have been solved by now. However, the reality is that there is a complex set of factors that continuously affect every business. While the standard processes manage the usual changes in business, when complex scenarios happen, even the best organizations cannot identify and show agility to address the situation in time. Some of the key contributory factors are:

External factors are uncontrollable; an organization's response relies on its ability to detect and adapt swiftly, distinguishing it from competitors. 

  • Competition is pivotal, resembling an ongoing chess game in which businesses counteract each other's moves to gain market share. Your organization's agility and adaptability, driven by strategic or product teams, are crucial in responding to competitors' strategies.
  • Regulatory changes can abruptly affect the business landscape. While large organizations may influence or anticipate these changes, smaller ones often need more resources, which can vary their market performance. 
  • Customers continually seek superior, affordable, and convenient solutions that align with their values. Organizations that promptly adapt to changing preferences thrive, whereas others may falter significantly, similar to the experiences of Netflix, Uber, and Amazon.   

Now to the Internal Factors. These factors are within the organization's boundaries and can be controlled with investments and suitable approaches. 

  • Execution Discipline: Employee discipline varies due to individual habits and upbringing. The collective discipline across teams dictates organizational output and overall performance. Even a few procrastinators can significantly hinder organizational goals.  
  • Employee Engagement: Ultimately, everything an organization delivers hinges on every employee completing tasks, from strategic to primary. Hence, employee engagement is the most important of all the factors that drive an organization. Our preferred definition is "The aggregate willingness of all the employees to work towards organization goals." Engagement levels vary due to employee turnover, stress, and perceptions of being heard and satisfied with leadership. Strategic decisions and leadership changes can significantly alter morale and engagement. While it's only possible sometimes to please everyone or closely manage mid-managers, consistent focus is essential for maintaining engagement.    

What can be done about it? How could Execution Consistency be achieved at an Enterprise scale?  

Our point of view is that to run a successful business in modern times, a single process rather than two separate processes, as is done today, is needed to address both organizational objectives achievement and employee engagement.
